Lorry Loader Training

Introduction
Every year many operatives are injured or killed whilst operating mobile plant and equipment. All drivers of any plant and equipment should be aged 18 or over, adequately trained, competent and authorised to operate plant. This course is designed to provide candidates with theoretical knowledge and practical training to safely operate a lorry loader with a hook, clamshell bucket or hydraulic clamp attachment as required by current legislation.

Aims
By the end of the course all delegates will:

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources i.e. duties charts, and applicable legislation.
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks of the carrier vehicle and lifting appliance
  • Configure the lorry loader and carrier vehicle for site and road travel.
  • Manoeuvre the carrier vehicle into position in order to carry out the lifting of various loads.
  • Set up carrier vehicle to carry out lifts from minimum to maximum radius.
  • Select, check and use correct lifting gear for the lifting of various loads.
  • Lift and place loads at varying radii.
  • Load a vehicle in accordance with industry practices.
  • Secure various loads on the vehicle bed in accordance with industry practices.
  • Explain precautions to be taken for underground and overhead services and other hazards.
  • Keep within safe working parameters.

Who should attend?
Any person required to operate a lorry loader within their workplace or wishing to improve their operating skills and knowledge or who require to add a new endorsement to their operator’s card. Delegates must hold a relevant driving license.

Course content
Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974, PUWER, LOLER and other related legislation, pre-operational checks and daily maintenance. Mobility and stability factors including siting, safety rules and procedures applicable to operating, load indicators, limit switches and hydraulic safety devices. Operate all controls safely and sympathetically. Slinging, attaching, lifting, manouvering and lowering of common loads carried. Documentation required. Shut-down procedures.

Novices (including Safety Awareness Course) 5 Days - 3 Delegates

Outcome
Successful delegates will be issued with a Certificate of Achievement.
